(VIOLIN, VIOLA, PIANO)
Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Etelka is a violinist, violist, fiddler and composer.
Having performed in chamber groups and orchestras, she also plays in a variety of styles besides Classical music, including Baroque, Cape Breton fiddle, Mediterranean/Latino, Turkish/Middle Eastern, and some Jazz.
She has a Bachelor of Music Degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, and a Master of Music Degree in Composition from the Birmingham Conservatoire, UK as well as a Master of Music in Middle Eastern Violin Performance.
Teaching has been a passion of hers for several years, and she took advantage of the Weingarten Scholarship in 2007 to study at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute in Kecskemet, Hungary. There she also learned of the Colourstrings concept (a Kodaly-based music kindergarten and instrumental teaching method used throughout Europe), and has enjoyed using it in her violin and piano lessons ever since, especially with young children.
Etelka continues to develop her teaching by attending courses and workshops whenever she can. She welcomes students of all ages, including adult beginners and adolescents.
Ming Mei Xu obtained her Bachelor of Violin Performance Degree in Beijing in 2011. She studied with Mr. Zhenguo Pang and Mr. Bing Yu at the Central Conservatory of Music.
After graduating with honors, she was a professional violinist in the Beijing Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra (2011), the Beijing Oriental Holiday Symphony Orchestra (2013) and the Beijing Legato Chamber Orchestra (2013).
She was a guest violin teacher at Gu An Children's Centre in Beijing, which is dedicated to expanding the popularity of violin education. Many of her students have performed outstandingly in competition, and gained admission as gifted students to the best primary and middle schools in Beijing.
In 2015, Ming Mei began attending the M.Mus. program at the University of Alberta under the supervision of Professor Guillaume Tardif. In 2017 she successfully completed the program earning a Master of Music Degree. Ming Mei is also involved as an orchestra and string assistant at Grandin Catholic School in Edmonton.
